Have you ever peeled a lemon and that beautiful scent from the mist fills the room? That is the essential oil!
Essential oils are the ~natural extracts~ from plants that are found in every part of the plant (seeds, bark, stems, roots, flower petals, etc.). Basically, plants have essential oils similar to how humans have blood; they help regulate the functions of the plant and promote overall health.
So how do essential oils help us? Well, for starters, they are known to therapeutically affect the inner workings of our body. They have calming qualities for stress reduction, better sleep and mood enhancement to boot! They also improve function in various systems of the body.
I first started using essential oils for my migraine headaches. Don’t get me wrong, I am not against modern medicine by any means but when you get multiple migraines (with aura!) per week, popping Sumaptriptan (+ ibuprofen) multiple times per day just didn’t sit well with me. Although I do still turn to Sumpatriptan when in desperate need, I found that using Peppermint essential oil has drastically helped when I start feeling the symptoms.
I’ve heard they also help with:
- Nausea (Ginger, Peppermint, Lavender)
- Cramps (Lavender, Sage, Marjoram)
- Headache (Peppermint, Lavender, Eucalyptus)
- Muscular Aches & Spasms (Lemon, Lavender, Rosemary)
- Boosting immunity (Eucalyptus, Frankincense)
- Anxiety, Stress, Depression (Chamomille, Lavender, Ylang Ylang)
- Fatigue & Insomnia (Lemon, Black Pepper, Peppermint)
- Circulatory problems (Ginger, Black Pepper, Cypress)
- Hair Loss (Lavender, Cedarwood, Thyme)
Though you can use essential oils topically, I typically like to use high quality essential oils in my essential oil diffuser. Essential oils are never applied directly to the skin. They must always be diluted with a carrier oil. Usually, a few drops of essential oil to an ounce of carrier oil is recommended. Some examples of carrier oils are sweet almond oil or olive oil.
I’m really hoping to dabble more into the world of essential oils and eventually live more of a chemical free lifestyle (will def keep you updated on this) and am so curious to know if any of you use essential oils or if you plan on incorporating them into your lifestyle as well?
